OK, so my laptop is currently running the Vista Home Premium that came with it.
Now, it's been running fine up until now, and it's reached that time to reformat and re-install.
I have the comp currently setup to dual boot both Vista and XP (for games).
the choice I have now is ....
dump vista and stay XP, or dump XP and upgrade to Seven? I won't just upgrade, I'll wipes and clean install it though to end that bit of confusion.
I mean I like some things about vista, but I like the cleaner less memory intensive format of XP. Currently I generally use the comp for watching movies and surfing the net.
Vista has been bogging down lately and regular maintenance is not curing it ... time for a wipe.
So ....
XP?
Seven?

I ran ubuntu for a few months on my school laptop and I loved it and I had vista before seven and ubuntu but one my gaming rig I run seven and really like it. So I would say upgrade to seven than dual boot with a ubuntu through a program called woobie. Woobie is a program that puts a disk image on ur hard drive than when u boot ur bios finds 2 different OS's and let's you choose which one to boot to. The really nice thing about running ubuntu like this is it only takes up 30 gigs of space. The bad thing is u only have 30 gigs of space for ubuntu but that's not really a problem if ur just using abuntu for word processing and things like that.

Ive always stood behind XP. But I was curious and tried 7. Well I haven't gone back. My machine runs faster and smoother by far. I have had it on since before Xmas. I have a XP install on teh second drive but have never had to boot it up. All my games work great. I play a lot of high end games set on Max and it looks great. I do alot of web design and graphics and all my adobe software works purfect except I had a memory issue with Illistrator. to fix it all I did was run the exe. in XP mode and all is fixed.

The only other issue was with Guitar Rig, but it was designed to install using the XP file structure, but that was a simple fix for the default sounds.

My wife and my stores POS system uses VISTA and I hate it with a passion, I was surprised I liked 7 so much. ALthough some things are like VISTA, but it runs better and plays games better then XP. Also if you have a kick <swear filter> computer and wnat to play all the games in detail, you need Win7 for DirectX11. Plus all new games and software are being designed for Win7. XP is now on the course of being non-supported and will happen in the next year or so.

Pretty much a coin toss in my books given that you already own XP and would have to fork out for 7. If you have alot of resources on your system (ie: you've got a good CPU and a fair bit of Ram) the difference between 7 and XP will be noticeable, if you're running lean you probably won't see much difference at all.

I have one system running 7 and several running XP and find the differences nominal on the performance level (at least for the stuff I do). I have no real complaints with 7 other than they've simplified stuff a fair bit and hidden alot of the advanced controls that I'm used to using, for most people that's a bonus rather than a nuisance though. On the flip side I know XP very well including how to work around the few things that do crop up and can pretty much make it dance the way I want it to (7 I'm still occasionally stuck in the box).
