If he is wanting to play bushball and recball then I would look at a BT-4 Combat or any of the BT-4 lines. THey are very upgradable, impossible to distroy and always reliable and easy to maintain. It can be upgraded to full auto or made to look mil sim. They start at $109-150 for the marker, I have seen some really good packages out there too for them.
Another option would be a Tippmann custom 98 ($150-199) or there new Entry marker (about $99 US, not sure the canadain price). But I recommend the BT-4's over them anyday.
The rest you can spend on a Good mask and Tank, vest, Remote and other stuff to get started.
Talk to Tomn8r here on the forums, he just opened his new shop out by the Bungy Zone outside of Nanaimo, I'm sure he can get you some ripper prices on some kind of package. If you can't make it to Nanaimo, but can to Vic. Check out Harreson's Military, he has a huge selection of Tippmann and other markers. Plus he is #1 in Camo gear and other military equipment.
Now if your son is a Speed Junky then hopefully one of them can recommend a good marker. also check out the used for sale section here, there are always someone strapped for money looking to sell quickly.

i'd say buy something off of the forum here because the people here are usually straight shooters and if the price is wrong you'll usually hear about it.
like SouthPark said, we won the Invert mini at a tournament a month and a bit ago and it's brand new in packaging. 275 is a good deal if you look at them new on any of the canadian sites.
My advice (not everyone may agree)
Mask:
is to get a mask first because if you have a comfortable mask, you won't be prone to take your mask off and younger kids seem to not realize how serious it is that they keep their masks on. so, dont go cheap, but you don't need excessively expensive either. better masks will last longer, and they will be comfortable. you want to get one that he should be able to wear for lengthy periods of time (hour or so) without taking it off. make sure his ears don't get pinched etc. Make sure he likes it.. if he likes it, he'll WANT to wear it
Gun: after you have a mask, look into a gun. (a spyder doesn't count.) he doesn't need an electric hopper just because he has an electronic marker. get him a 50 round hopper and some 10 round tubes to keep his paint consumption down. like i said, get a speedball gun because he won't have to haul a heavy mil sim around and he will be able to play tighter and have better accuracy ( no offense to the mil-simmers out there. i know you have hella accurate guns)
aaaanyways... im sure i just made this thread a war between woodsball and speedball but i've played both and i think the speedball marker with the 50 round hopper is best.

Longstar, Spyders have pretty much the worst overall performance and maintenance track record of any marker manufacturer I know of. Sure they work well when compared to any of your broken markers, but I hardly consider that a reasonable comparison. "Cheap" and "Good Value" are not the same thing and I gather Jhon is looking for recommendations that will WORK for his son not that will work for a few weeks for his son and then break and spend all their time being mailed out for repairs or smashed on rocks in frustration.
Seriously, if all you can afford is a Spyder do yourself a favor, get a good mask and stick with Rental Markers for a while until you can afford something better. Literally 4 out of 5 times I've seen a Spyder at the field it suffered a major issue at some point during the day, sometimes fixable at the field but usually not... that's a pretty poor track record...

For the price of the new spyders you can buy much better speedball guns like the mini g3 or slg.... or browse the forum.
I have rocked the newsest spyder (electra) for 6 moths or so and still whip it out once in awhile.
Though it will shoot when working when its not working you will have nightmares finding out whats wrong. escpically with a beginner paintball like your son. Finding parts can also be a nightmar. Also many of their threads are non universial. which usually requires u to buy their parts.... which are <swear filter>
Bottom line listen to everone else and dont do it
Also i agree with JC go for the mask first.
playing with a cheap mask can effect your preformance ie. fogging scratching, less feild of view ect.
And when i have a more expensive mask on compared to a cheap mask/rental it deffinetly makes me fell alot safer and more confidence
Just voicing my opinions

Im not telling you what to buy, but i have been down the woodsball road and now play speedball and woodsball once and a while. and i got rid of my woodsball stuff because it's heavy, cumbersome, and when i went to play woodsball i tended to come up against other speedballers. It seems that from what i've seen, there are a lot more woodsballers using speedball markers.. I dont use big hoppers like some do, just the 50 rd. but it's nice to have the great accuracy with the lightweight marker, and the quick few shots here and there if needed
...again MY opinion... feel free to back me up or disagree

as for a good STARTER speedball gun? i would reccomend a smart parts ion. you could probably find a used one for like 125-150. i have an ion and still use it for woodsball. very reliable gun with minimal technical problems. in my opinion of course.

tnt and jordan hit the nail on the head. so i would consider what they have to say.
but there is more than 1 viable optionon the table; those invert mini's that war party won would be your best bargain. a mid-level marker for a lower-end price. can't beat that. - don't forget a great mask. really important.
