is there any interest in doing a little work this weekend comming prior to may long? IE 15th and 16th? I know of some materials for new bunkers or improving/fixing existing ones. In addition I thought to maybe clear up some underbrush to make it easier for those camping. Draining the massive puddles in the road, making the board walk to the safe zone wider (or adding a additional way in) maybe some reflagging of play area's etc.??? the idea's are endless really but manpower is less so.

I can commit some building materials (scrap wood, screws, nails rope, ty wraps in limited supply) hand tools (ax, shovels, pick axe, hammers of various types, come along) and battery power tools. Know of some illegal dump sites I could scavage from as well.

anyway, anyone interested? I'm probably gonna head up on my own at various times but wanted to coordinate if others interested. Chainsaw in particular would be of huge benefit, possibly firewood donations?

I don't actually have any plans for the weekend, and I'm a bit far away (Nanaimo). But I will tell you what.

If a bunch of volunteers from Nanaimo could carpool up, I would be willing to donate a day (or even two) to come up with them and help prepare the site.
I've got plenty of time and energy, come with some of my own supplies, and it would be a great chance to get to know the lay of the field. The only thing
stopping me from going there right now is the fact that I don't have transportation of my own.

probably head up there saturday morning sometime then. really would be nice to get a better bridge over to the safe area, and drain those lake like puddles on the road. not to mention clearing a few fallen trees further up the road. bunker work is 2nd to that happening. thanks in advance anyone else who makes a appearance. probably gonna take my pb gear as well ... just in case

Is anyone else worried about the lack of discussion on this topic?

This weekend would be the best opportunity we have to prepare the site for May Long - as opposed to "Hey, here's a brilliant idea - let's wait until we have sixty to a hundred players impatiently waiting at the gate before we undertake this project."

- If you haven't volunteered yet, today could be your last day to do so. If you want in, sound off with your names and locations.
- If you HAVE volunteered, you should be trying to coordinate with the other volunteers to get to the site.
- Who -ARE- the other volunteers, anyway? Has anyone gotten a head count yet?

Myself, I've already spent the week packing up my 'field construction kit' and getting it all strapped together for a weekend job. I've got shovels, sandbags, hatchets, nails/screws, camo netting, spray paint, a power drill, water and enough stimulants to keep the crew chopping, digging, and whistling for a week. If there was a bus to Port Alberni, I'd be waiting at the stop right now.

Unfortunately, though, even the best-prepared volunteer is useless if he's stuck in the next town.

Let's get some dialog happening, folks! What do you need, where do you need it, how are we gonna get it there, and when?

If I lived near by I would be there in a heartbeat - living in Victoria doesn't exactly make this a day trip option for me.
HUGE thanks to all the volunteers and commited players that are putting in all this prep work to make the big game more enjoyable for everyone coming.

Some of us South Islanders will just have to pack up extra beers for you guys.

I'm going to be up there by noon on saturday. Wanted to be there in the morning, but was not made aware of a scheduling issue, namely T-Ball photo's for my two boys. But anyway, I'll be up there by noon, probably sooner, but don't want anyone showing up wondering where the <swear filter> I am. I live local here in Port Alberni so can't give you a ride wing, sorry, just be a lil rough driving to and from nanaimo for me. However, for the weekend of may long, perhaps you could bring the building materials you've gathered? If we don't get them out and in use during may long I'll happily put them to use on the field for the next big hump game.

That goes for anyone comming may long. Feel free to bring field material donations. We can store materials just off to the side of the safe zone. Not asking for anyone to put out $$ but if you got all the wood from that old fence you tore out last fall.... reduce reuse recycle right? or.... if its dry.... bon fire bishes!!

Sheot - good call I think my Dad put up a new fence at his house last month - I'll call him and see if he got the old stuff hauled away yet.

Heck yes I'm coming up for it.
Beers, Bonfires, Bush Ballin over a long weekend.

Dad got rid of his old fence material - so I'll be filling the back of the truck with all my camping gear - etc.

Need anything Tom?
I'll have extra room in the back of the truck if you need me to stop by to load up some shiz for ya.

I'm sorry, FEER, but I don't actually have any building supplies (aside from a few empty sandbags and a camo net). All I can donate this weekend are the tools and a few days of my own manpower to put them to good use. And next weekend, it will be too late - especially if a hundred players show up to find out the field's flooded or needs some major overhauling. Then by the time the work's done, the only people to have the energy to play paintball are the ones who didn't chip in.

Wish I didn't need to be so pessimistic - it doesn't come naturally, I assure you! - but I've seen it happen before. Not just paintball, but camping, biking, you name it.

All the same, I agree with you that one volunteer (no matter how spirited and well-prepared) is not worth the two round trips between Po'Alberni and Nanaimo it would take to get him to the job site and back.

I hear ya wing nut. The site needs some work. more then we can get done tomorrow or during the long weekend. Hopefully people will relize the value teh Hump site can have for everyone on the island and we can start to get it in shape over this summer, to be even better. I would like to see the old field area turned into better parking and campsites. so it can handle big events better. right now the major issue is parking, staging and camping. But we will do our best to get it in better shape for next weekend. I'm going to try hard to get out tomorrow. Wife works afternoon, and kids have yet another b-day. Hopefully she will handle the bday so I can come out and help. If not I will drag my kids up there later in teh afternoon. If you guys are still going to be there.

well it was just me today. no biggy, about what I expected. I wasn't able to do much in the way of clearing the road to the old field. There is still the walking path. I did some work in the current field with rebuilding old bunkers and made a couple new ones.

May Long it would be REALLY good if somebody was to bring a chain saw. Theres a few trees that need clearing and ppl would be able to drive in further to the old field for parking and camping. If memory serves theres 3 trees down across the road. I might be able to do something this week but I got a lot around the house that needs doing before I go back to work after may long.

Good news, the whole field has dried out a fair bit. The swamp is still a couple feet deep at the centre but the ground isn't soaked anymore. Likewise the road puddles are just mud pits now... I looked at drainage channels.. not much to be done really. Maybe next year can look at taking several yards of gravel up there?! But really, if my mini van with trailer on can get in and out np... everyone else should be fine.

So I got a few hours of work done... then a group of 10? thirteen year olds w/ parents showed up for a paint ball birthday party lol. The dad was impressed that I was up there solo working, so he let me jump in on a few games using the gear he'd rented, his air and his paint. all rental gear, but still, nice way to end off the day. P'wning 12 - 14 year olds. Although I must say, the dads idea of 8 vs 2 was ill advised, especially with all 8 of the kids on defence and us attacking.

Um, we really need to spread the word as well, that what you brining in to the hump, you take out from the hump. There was a amazing amount of trash (paint bags, cases, pop/beer cans etc) up there. Its a free place to play but that also means nobody is getting payed to clean up after us.

dude. coolio that u did something. 100 potential players - 1 that showed to help - tis the way of the new world order i guess; take take take. eat eat eat. consume consum consume. i41 can pull reasons. i'm sure most of us can. but truth is u went above and byond the call of duty and hopefully you can use some of what u did 2day 2slay next weekend! (custom forts, attack/defend enlightenments etc).

I can bring up a chain saw on Sunday if you like.

No mater what group there are those that just get it done... the ones that dive in and work... it is par for the course. No point in lamenting this fact. It is the way of human group dynamics. Some embrace the work ethic. Others just like to watch while scratching the jock and smoking blunts.... stupid hippies.

Thanks for your work Feer_Jeer. I was unfortunately recruited for kid duties. I was going to take my 5 yr old with me up, but it was 5 until I was able to and figured anyone up there would be cleared out by then. SOrry I couldn't be there. I really wanted to get up there, just to see what needs to be done at best. I'll try to do a walk around tomorrow if possible. I think I will make signs that will withstand weather stating to carry there garbage out and things like that. DOn't know if any of the ones I made last time survived or not.

Hopefully if we can come up with a plan we can didicate time over the long weekend to get some stuff done. Is anyone coming out friday night to set up there camps? I would like to try to get sites marked off for tents and try to leave the road open for anyone brining in trailers and for Tom's van and truck with the air and paint.

if i was home i would have been there helping out. unfortunately because of my 4 week on 4 week off schedule I am stuck at work. I did leave a bunch of wood and some scrap nails up there from the last work weekend we had before the first hump game. when i get home at the end of the month I will go up and do some more work on the field. i will have a well running chainsaw this time and will be able to cut some more dead-fall and I can get my hands on some used but good palets and possible some more scrap wood. I am sorry FEER was alone doing the maintenance this time. I thought for sure the other AA members would have showed up or atleast chimed in here saying they couldn't make it. I know one guy has been working a bit again and the other guy doesn't have a car.

Thank you FEER_JEER for the hard work you did in prep for the 2nd Hump Gathering
