I would love to review the meadia material that prompted the shut down of the AXBL.

It's too bad. I'm sure some teams still wanted the product.

We might have better luck poking Matt for the dirt - or not.

With a line like "we are giving the players what they want - the death of AXBL"...well someone was pissed off when writing that no doubt about it.
Could there not of been some AXBL players/franchises that still wanted the product?
Maybe some did but not enough to make it a go - or some did but most others slagged it.

Guess we'll find out the scoop eventually.

I'm just glad that CXBL is still going and is SOLD OUT for the 2010 season.
Looking forward to see what binds the two Tsawwassen teams together and how they grind it out this year

Sure, just not enough.

The big difference between the AXBL and the CXBL is that there are other viable options (witht eh same or similar enough formats) for players to choose to play in the US, where in Canada, the CXBL is pretty much the only game around in that format.

The dirt: the AXBL has unfortunately been a money loser for two years, due to franchises dropping out of play halfway through the year. This is not unheard of in Canada, but for the last two years in the CXBL, a franchise has never missed a game to the best of my knowledge. This means everyone who paid to play, got to play. In the AXBL, this has not been the case so much.

I believe that Louie and Chris and Robert probably got fed up with players and team owners complaining and threatening to dro out before the year even got started and said: "fu*k it, instead of missing another 3 weekends and maybe losing some more cash, I'll just stay home and drink Fireball."

At least, that's what I would have done. I feel bad for the people who bought franchises last year off of owners, but who knows what will get worked out? Before anybody feels necessary to point it out to me, or to repeat the massive complaints from a PBNation thread - I didn't write the press release, and yes, it does seem a bit like I'm taking my ball and going home. My Xball, in this case.

Matt

Horrible situation for all involved (owners, franchise holders, fans and players... based on what I have read).

I guess that there is more then one motive behind running a league... cash profit would be one but the sense of personal satisfaction and appreciation for efforts put in would be another and, IMO, this would be of value to me in terms of motivating me to do the work to provide a top product to the consumer (franchise holders, players and fans). Sounds like both were missing for the owners of the league so they decided to stay home??? Little profit and a sense of not being appreciated would have kept me home to... and I get why the players, fans and franchise owners are not happy either. I guess all everyone can do at this point is move along and gear up for play in alternate leagues while the owners focus on the Canadian leagues. Such is life.

Yes, I think attitudes were certainly a factor in the decision, but the finances were the deciding factor. With only 39 of 48 franchises paid, the league could not print jerseys for owners who were withholding payment, and of course, the jerseys must be paid up front to Tanked, the new jersey manufacturer for what would have been both leagues.

As I said, unfortunate situation all around, but when you are losing money, something has got to give. It's interesting to see all the player support on PBNation - as well as all the hate. Guess that kind of tells the story. Now the players who bitched so much (and unfortunately those who didn't) can each pay $300 to $350 US per player on a 7 man team for USPL, or about the same for the PSP, to play - per event.
