The rumour mill does churn out a lot of stories, but this one may be more truth than fiction. Not sure what the details are, but if true, it's sad to see to see a stalwart of the industry lost to the recession.

I heard they laid off 60 employees. I don't believe that is 90% of their staff. I also heard rumours last week that SP's salestaff was put on notice to sell more products. From that, my conclusion would be that they have a surplus of inventory and need to liquidate some of that. They are probably just cutting back on develpopement and production to save some money, just like a lot of companies whose sales are down right now.

Rumours spread really quickly these days. Doesn't make them all true though.

company's like sp can go down but there are always 2 companys ready to take their place. paintball evolution. sp hasn't shaken up the industry like they use to for quite some time. how about some R&D to get rid of that stoopid frikkin hopper. dopey big ugly round thing on the top of the gat. silly dopey idiotic hopper. like putting a huge beachball on top of an indy car. just doesn't make sense.

SP isn't going out of business. Adam Gardner released a statement.

"Loyalhanna, PA – Sept. 03, 2009 – “The rumors of my death have been greathly exaggerated.” This famous quote often attributed to Mark Twain is also applicable to Smart Parts, Inc. The manufacturer and distributor of paintball products, now in its 20th year of operation remains in business, despite internet rumors to the contrary.

Due to recent paintball industry contraction, wideley believed to be linked to current economic conditions, Smart Parts downsized, laying off a number of employees on September 2nd. This staffing change has resulted in fast-flowing and incorrect rumors.

“It was painful to do so.” said company Vice-President Adam Gardener. “We are a family owned and operated business as well as a major employer in our community. Unfortunately current market conditions have forced this staff reduction upon us. The rumors that we have closed, gone into or are planning on going into bankruptcy, are completely false.”

Smart Parts remains open for business, taking orders and shipping product as usual."
